JEANNIE WALL

Jeannie Wall's choice of volunteer work was perhaps an easy one.  Cancer has hit two generations of her family so her work with cancer-related organizations and Hospice of Charleston is something she feels passionate about.  She's a big supporter of the American Cancer Society and back home in North Carolina she participates each year with her mother, a breast cancer survivor, in the Relay 4 Life event.  Jeannie finds time for her volunteer work despite a full class schedule and her job as a paralegal at a local law firm.  She believes in giving back to the community because she and her family have been the recipients of the good work service organizations  can give those in need.

Hometown:  Asheboro, North Carolina
Degree Objective:
  Corporate Communications
Expected Graduation:   December 2005
Current employment: I am a paralegal with Richter & Haller, LLC in Mt. Pleasant.
Current volunteer activities:  I am a volunteer with Hospice of Charleston and I also volunteer every year on my mom’s Relay 4 Life team in Randolph County, North Carolina.
What are you most proud of contributing to your organization?  Unfortunately, like so many families, cancer has affected my family in more ways than one.  My mom is a breast cancer survivor and my grandmother passed away in October 2001 after being diagnosed with cancer.  The American Cancer Society works so hard to find a cure for cancer.  Hospice goes above and beyond by providing palliative care to people who are terminally ill and their families.  In my mind, both of these organizations have done and given a tremendous amount for me and my family, so I am proud of being able to give back, even in the smallest of ways.
Previous volunteer activities:  ASCEND Foundation (Anne Scandalios Cancer Ends Now Directive) and Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County.

What do you enjoy about community service?  I enjoy getting to meet new people and hearing the many stories they want to share.  But most of all I enjoy the opportunities of helping others.  Even in the most difficult of situations, being able to help someone and seeing the smile on their face is pretty amazing.

Most memorable volunteer experience?  My mom has been cancer free for seven years.  Every year at Relay 4 Life is a memorable experience for me.  Getting to see her walk that first survivor’s lap along with all the other survivors still makes me cry.

What have you learned about yourself through volunteering?  I’ve learned that when you are so passionate about something, it almost becomes second nature to be able to support and promote it and to be able to talk to others about it.

How do you think your friends and/or co-workers would describe you?  I think my friends and co-workers would describe me as being strong, hard-working and caring.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering?  Don’t volunteer for the wrong reasons.  If you are going to volunteer and become involved with an organization, do it because you feel strongly about it and truly want to help.  There are so many organizations that desperately need volunteers, but not if you aren’t going to be committed.
