When
I first met Kiesha
McCausland, the first thing I noticed was her bright smile and positive
attitude. She truly embodies everything a philanthropist should
be-- genuine, selfless, outgoing and motivated. Originally, from
Hartford,
Conn., Keisha became involved in community service during high
school, and has continued her contributions throughout her four years
at the College of Charleston. This semester, Keisha has been extremely busy, with medical school applications, classwork, her sorority and other extra-curricular activities. As a molecular biology major, she hopes to attend medical school to become an obstetrician and gynecologist. Susan Morrison, associate provost and biology professor, helped lead us to Kiesha, one of many C of C students who volunteer at MUSC and other area hospitals. |
Hometown: Hartford, Connecticut Degree Objective: Molecular Biology Expected Graduation: May 2005 |
Current
volunteer activities? For the past two
years, Kiesha has been volunteering at the Medical University of South
Carolina's OB/GYN unit, helping mothers before and after
pregnancy. From this, she has gained experience in her desired
profession, medicine. |
What
are you most proud of
contribuiting to your organization? Kiesha's favorite
contribution was in a previous volunteer experience when she tutored
9th through 12th graders in the Gear-Up Program. She tutored high
school students in math and science, and found it very rewarding when a
challenged student came back and said, "Look, I just got an 'A' on my
last science test." |
Previous
volunteer activities? Where to
start? Kiesha has been involved all over the College of
Charleston campus and the Lowcountry, both independently and through
her sororiity, Alpha Kappa Alpha. Recently, her sorority
sponsored the Cougar Drop-off, in conjunction with Sigma Deta
Tau. The Drop-off was an activity where Kiesha and her sorority
sisters asked local businesses to donate to the Wish List of women and
children living at My Sister's House. Also, Kiesha and her
sorority sponsored five families for Thanksgiving, providing each with
a full Thanksgiving dinner. She volunteered at the Florence
Crittenton Center , a home for pregnant teenagers needing counseling
and special care during the prenatal time and after birth. Keisha
and her fellow sorority sisters made gift baskets for these young
mothers. |
Most
memorable volunteer experience(s)? "One of my most
memorable moments was when I escorted a new mother up to neonatal
intensive care until to see her new born daughter who was born very
premature. She allowed me to sit with her while she watched her
new born. Another moment I experienced was when I helped to
translate for a Spanish-speaking patient-- even when the nurses on
staff at the time couldn't understand her. I felt I had truly
made a difference." |
What have you learned about youself through volunteering? "In a hospital, you need more than one person to make a difference. Everyone is part of a team, and a great example is the health care field. The doctors, nurses, and other staff all work together to give patients the best possible care." |
How do
you think your friends or
co-workers would describe you? "Outspoken.
(Laughs) I talk a lot, but I also work really hard and I am very
determined. I try to influence my friends and help them to pursue
their goals. You can do anything if you just try." |
What
would you tell someone who is
thinking about volunteering? "Do it! If you
want a job in a particular career, volunteer in that field. It is
the best possible experience. Volunteering is also a great way to
network and develop relationships that may be beneficial to you later
on in life." |
