LENORA FOXE
Making Time For Others

LENORA FOXE (with Mama Holmes)

Helping others and finding time to spend with the aging is not very easy to do in this fast- paced society.  However, Lenora Foxe has dedicated her time and abilities to reach out and help.  Being in the Air Force R.O.T.C. and a full-time student, Lenora already has a full plate.  But she still manages to find one day a week to spend with a senior citizen, Miss Holmes.  She also made time to teach a Life Skills class at the Crisis Ministry downtown.  Through her caring and devoted attitude she is a model citizen and we are proud that she attends the College of Charleston.

Sociology Professor Brenda Sanders, who teaches a class in gerentology, nominated Lenora for The Volunteer Spirit project.

Hometown:  Elgin, South Carolina
Degree Objective:
   Sociology
Expected Graduation:   December 2005
Current volunteer activities:  I volunteer with the aging and Crisis Ministries.
What are you most proud of contributing to your organization?  My time and talent.
Previous volunteer activities:  Soup kitchen, holiday volunteer work, and summer camps for special needs children.
What do you enjoy about community service?  Knowing that the time and effort that I put into it is well spent.  I am currently in R.O.T.C. for the Air Force, and in the future I will be serving my country, and I will not be able to contribute my time for others as I do now.
Most memorable volunteer experience:  While teaching my Life Skills class I taught about job applications, and how to fill them out properly.  The next week, 40 percent of the class had made resumes and searched actively for jobs.  I saw an immediate impact that I made with others.  Also, I visit Miss Victoria Holmes, affectionately known as Mama Holmes.  She really counts on me and looks forward to my visits.  I enjoy her company as much as she enjoys mine.
What have you learned about yourself through volunteering?  I learned how one person can make a tremendous impact on the lives of others.
How do you think your friends or co-workers would describe you?  I think that they would say that I am very generous and warm hearted towards others.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering?  I would tell them to get involved because regardless what major you are and how little an impact you think you would have on others, it does indeed make a difference.
