Church Volunteer "Adored" by Children He Helps

Twice a week for two years, College of Charleston senior Max Berger has been a volunteer at St. Matthews Community Center on King Street.  Max is among a number of C of C students who work at the center's various programs which include an after-school program and English as a Second Language classes. 

About Max, St. Matthews Community Center director Emily Devine says, "He is extremely dedicated to the programs here, but most of all our kids adore him. 

Margaret Peck, executive director, St. Matthew's Community Outreach Program, has high praise for Max and the other C of C students who volunteer.

Expected Graduation:  May 2005
Current Community Service:  Max is currently volunteering at St. Matthews Community Center.  Back home in New Jersey, he volunteered at his local YMCA. 
What has been your most memorable volunteer experience?  When we took a field trip to the Lowcountry Children's Museum. 
What has been your proudest moment as a volunteer?  My proudest moment is that I have been able to motivate the kids and help them learn. 
What do you enjoy about community service?  I like to be a role model for the kids and lead by example. 
What have you learned about yourself through volunteering?  I have learned that helping others can help you change yourself. 
How do you think your friends or co-workers would describe you?  Highly motivational for kids.  Strict but fair. 
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering?  If you have free time and want to make a difference in a child's life, be a volunteer.
