College of Charleston senior Sarah Falkowsi is a volunteer dedicated to the school's MESSA organization. MESSA stands for Masters of Environmental Studies Students Associations. It is affiliated with C of C's Master of Environmental Studies program. Many members of MESSA are also involved with SCORE, The South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement Project, an initiative recognized with an award by the Bush Administration in November 2004. As you see below, Sarah is very involved with community service, especially those having to do with the outdoors and the environment. She was nominated for The Volunteer Spirit web project by Mark McConnell, coordinator of the college's MES program. |

What are you most proud of contributing
to your organization? Involvement--
I feel that I have been able to make things fun and sparked people's
interest, thus gaining more participation and involvement in MESSA
activities. |
Previous volunteer activities: Nature
Conservancy, Food Pantry |
What do you enjoy about community
service? I feel that it is
part of my civic duty as a responsible citizen. |
Most
memorable volunteer experience: Beach Sweep 2004 was really
cool. We took a boat out to Morris Island and picked up
trash. We got to see all kinds of neat seashells and aquatic
life-- a dolphin skeleton was one thing we saw-- that you would not
normally get a chance to see. |
What
have you learned about yourself through volunteering? If you can make the time, it is well
worth the effort. |
How do
you think your friends or co-workers would describe you? Organized! |
What would you tell someone who is
thinking about volunteering? Definitely
do it! |
