SARAH MCLAUGHLIN
Sarah McLaughlin, a C of C junior, keeps herself very busy in Charleston and not just with her school work.  Community service is a big part of Sarah's college life.  Originally from Fairfax, Va., Sarah has been committed to many different community service projects since the beginning of high school.  Currently, Sarah is active with groups such as CHAMP, which is an AIDS service project, the American Cancer Society, and has also worked with the Leukemia-Lyphoma Society for the past seven years.  When asked why she is so driven to help those in need Sarah replied, "It's amazing what a smile can do."  Sarah encourages all of her classmates to get involved with community service, insisting that every little bit helps.

from work at Boston, Mass. food bank.  They were there as part of the college's Alternative Spring Break program.  A shirt students in the ASB program wear sums up what Alternative Spring Break is about.  It says:  "We have better things to do than to get drunk and do drugs."

Hometown: Fairfax, Virginia Degree Objective: Corporate Communications (non-profit PR)
Expected Graduation: Spring 2006
Current Volunteer Activites: Right now I work for CHAMP which is an AIDS service project and I do some event planning for the American Cancer Society.
What are you most proud of contributing to your organization?  My energy and perseverance.  I have a passion for helping others.
What were your previous volunteer activities?  I have worked with the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society during high school and with a hospital in the Oncology Pediatrics department back home.
What was your most memorable volunteer experience?  I was working at the hospital with a 4 year old named Thomas who had lymphoma and hadn't gotten out of bed in almost two months, only because he didn't want to try.  I brought him in a life-size balloon to play with and he was so excited to have it that he got right out of bed and walked it down the entire hallway all by himself.
What have you learned about yourself through volunteering?  I am an extremely lucky person and am very thankful for that.  I have found that it has made my life better.
How would your friends and co-workers describe you?  They would describe me as the busiest person they know and crazy!!  But they also say I try my hardest to be positive about all situations.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering?  Call me!!  I'll take you with me and we will have fun! Every little bit that you can give helps.
