About Kristen Thibodeaux...
Hometown: Columbia, S.C. Major: Physical Education Expected Graduation: May 2009

Past Volunteer Activites: I was heavily involved in Habitat for Humanity, among other organizations, in high school.

Current Volunteer Activities: Kappa Delta Sorority, Teams in Training

What is your most memorable volunteer experience? I would have to say that my most memorable/ rewarding volunteer experience was training for the 26-mile marathon that I did in Arizona to fight leukemia. Though it was not too easy, I raised almost $4,000 alone to go towards the cause, and knowing that I could make that much of a difference by myself was incredibly rewarding and self-satisfactory.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organizations? I was president of Kappa Delta Sorority here at the College of Charleston from January 2008 to Fall 2009. During that time, we were named "Best Sorority on Campus" due to our volunteer record. We, as a sorority, are heavily involved in "Darkness to Light," which is an organization that promotes awareness of child abuse in America. We participate in galas, fundraisers, and TV commercials to try to spread awareness of this issue, which is ubiquitous yet underground.

What do you enjoy most about community service: Once again, I just feel completely satisfied and worthwhile when I can contribute to an organization. I used to tutor children at St. Mathew's Church on King Street my freshman year, and I remember that being one of the most rewarding experiences of that first year of college.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? Hardworking, happy

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? I would tell a potential volunteer that it is manageable to do so in college. A lot of students get absorbed in class and the social scenes, when there is still a lot of opportunity to volunteer out there.

What are your plans after graduation? Hopefully I'll find a job! I'd love to take some time and do some mission work. My years at the College of Charleston have been so rewarding that I'm incredibly sad to leave. I know that I have been well prepared both within and outside of the classroom to do great things.
