Many students love nothing more than a few hours of free time during their week. Katelyn Flouras does not spend her free time like any other typical college student, she spends it volunteering.

Katelyn somehow finds time to volunteer at numerous places while also being involved in many other organizations, which are listed below. Katelyn divides her free time, not to enjoy half of it, but to volunteer at multiple places.

She is a volunteer at Dr. Gwendolyn Brown's dentist office, MUSC Hospital, and MUSC's research lab. Katelyn conducts research embryonic heart development in mice. Katelyn commits numerous hours to this research and writes follow up reports daily recording her findings.

While volunteering at Dr. Brown's dentist office she assists dentists and hygienists with their daily duties, which she does for the experience not for pay. At MUSC Katelyn assists patients before and after their operations attending to their every need.

Each week Katelyn devotes 20 hours to her volunteer work, on top of her 16 hour academic work load.

Katelyn is the recipient of two prestigious scholarships: the College of Charleston's Presidential Scholarship and the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship for her scholastic and volunteer experience.

Needless to say, Katelyn Flouras is an enormous asset to the College of Charleston and the organizations she serves.

About Katlyn Flouras...
Hometown: North Augusta, S.C. Major: Biology Expected Graduation: May 2010

Past Volunteer Activites: I volunteered at dentist offices in high school, with my church, and student organizations. I also served at the community center in my hometown.

Current Volunteer Activities: I am the vice president administration for Tri Delta Sorority, the president of the American Student Dental Association, a Charleston 40 tour guide, the meeting coordinator of Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Professions organization, and a member of Phi Eta Sigma an honors fraternity. I volunteer at three different places, MUSC the school, MUSC doing research for the hospital, and Dr. Gwendolyn Brown's dentist office. I do other seasonal volunteer work with St. Jude Research hospital as well.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience? My most memorable experiences occur daily. We are faced with new hardships each day that we have to overcome in the dentist office. Learning and excelling through these hardships are my most memorable experiences. People come to us feeling like they have no hope left and their smile is ruined and we help them regain their confidence, which is very rewarding.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organizations? My proudest contribution to the American Student Dental Association is raising the bar of the organization. Membership had been on the decline and I, along with the help of other members, have raised the membership total tremendously.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? I think my friends would describe me as dedicated and committed. I commit to everything I do and finish everything I start. I am very dedicated to the work I do, which is why I enjoy it so much.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? Do it! It is rewarding and educational!

What are your plans after graduation? My Goal and dream is to attend dental school.
