Kara is a motivated individual who is willing to put others ahead of herself. She works with Best Buddies. Founded 20 years ago, Best Buddies is an international organization that pairs people with intellectual disabilities with, in our case, College of Charleston students, allowing them the opportunity to build long-lasting friendships.

Best Buddies has enriched Kara's life and positively affected the lives of those she has worked with and befriended.

She says she enjoys volunteering because you can actually see the reward and how you have touched and helped enhance someone's life.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience? I am most proud of the successful friendships created this year in Best Buddies. When we find a college student who is willing to really invest in the program, it is heart warming to see the impact they are making on their buddy's life and just watching them interact together makes you feel really awesome! The matching process takes a long time and we try very hard to find people we think will be compatible together, so it is extremely rewarding to see it work out.

Why do you volunteer? Because it feels rewarding to see hard work pay off and to see that you are capable of making a difference to someone else.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? Friendly, motivated, involved, ambitious, persistent

Why should people volunteer? Because there are so many opportunities available that everyone can find some form of volunteer work that they can enjoy doing. It's a great self-esteem booster because when you see the impact you are making, you feel much better about yourself and you will learn more about yourself as well!

How can we find out more about Best Buddies? If anyone is interested in volunteering, they should consider Best Buddies as a possible option for next year. If you want more information visit https://www.bestbuddies.org/ or e-mail us at bestbuddiescofc@gmail.com
