Lanier Clement has been volunteering for Pet Helpers for almost a year and she can't seem to get enough of it.

Her involvement in Pet Helpers not only allows her to have fun with cats and dogs but it gives Lanier an inside look on how important adopting a pet could be.

With aspirations of law school in the future, this New Orleans native's love of our four legged friends captures the Cougar Volunteer Spirit in a "Big Easy" way!

Learn more about Lanier in the interview to follow.

About Lanier Clement...
Hometown: New Orleans, La. Major: Communication Expected Graduation: Spring 2010

Past Volunteer Activites: In high school, at Sacred Heart in New Orleans, I was a member of the cross country team and never had time to do as much volunteer work as I had hoped but I have always had a love for animals I couldn't pass up the opportunity to join a group like Pet Helpers.

Current Volunteer Activities: Pet Helpers and Chi Omega

What is your most memorable volunteer experience? They're all memorable to me but I do get attached to some pets but some days when I return and those certain animals are gone I can't help to push away the sadness and be so grateful and happy that they have been adopted.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organizations? Working with Pet Helpers allows me express my love for animals. I absolutely love all pets and I believe that I do make a difference to these animals even if it is just a walk around the area or five minutes of play time. My time spent with Pet Helpers has opened my eyes on how important it is to adopt your pets and hopefully I will educate and encourage others to do so.

What do you enjoy most about community service: I like the after-feeling of knowing that I have helped someone or something. Its such a great accomplishment when you do things for others and get to see their reaction.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? I would say that my friends describe me as really outgoing and caring. I'm a great listener and enjoy helping others and being around animals.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? What is there to think about? I would tell them to please come and help these animals. Even though they are animals some of them have been neglected so any attention they get they love. Some of them have bad stories but all you can do is think positive and give the pets as much time as you can and hope that they will one day be adopted.

What are your plans after graduation? I plan to go to law school at some point maybe not right after graduation. I really would like to get some traveling done after college and maybe do some missionary work with my church. I will most likely end up going to law school in Louisiana and hope to live in New Orleans once I am done with school.

How can someone can involved with Charleston's Pet Helpers? You can go to the organization's website at www.pethelpers.org and there is so much information about the introductory seminar and how you can be a part of Pet Helpers.
