Caila Mackey is a volunteer to the core. Just look at her list of community service activities mentioned in the interview below. They include soup kitchens, food and fundraising drives, mission trips with her church, and don't forget the Girl Scouts!

At the College of Charleston, she is a part of her sorority, Kappa Delta, which is involved in many community volunteer activities. She also went on her first Alternative Spring Break this year with the college and had a wonderful experience
. Caila went to Jamaica, just one of the many places around the world where College of Charleston students have traveled as part of the school's innovative Alternative Spring Break program.

Caila hopes next year to lead one of the ASB trips. If she does, we know that group will be in good hands where ever the students go!

About Caila Mackey...
Hometown: Bedford, Va. Major: International Business Expected Graduation: Spring 2011

Past Volunteer Activites: I have been on two missions trips to Beliz with my church. We did construction and repairs to local churches in Beliz. In high school, I was involved with the Interact Club which held many food drives. I also did Trick or Treat for UNICEF which collected canned food for the needy on Halloween night instead of candy. And ever since I can remember, my mom and I go and serve food and drinks at the local soup kitchen, Shepherd's Table, at home.

Current Volunteer Activities: Right now, I am the Girl Scout Committee Chair for my sorority, Kappa Delta. It is a great way to raise support and money for the girl scouts in our area. I also went on the Alternative Spring Break trip to Jamaica this past Spring Break.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organizations? With the Girl Scouts, I have established our sorority with the organization again. In previous years, the girls that were in my same position as Girl Scout Committee Chair did not participate or contribute much to the Girl Scouts organizations, so I am proud to say that I have not done the same. I have been committed to the Girl Scout organization and in return, have gotten our sorority the recognition it has been missing.

What do you enjoy most about community service:
I just love helping people and traveling. I love getting to know other people of different backgrounds and hearing about their lives. I also enjoy meeting the new people I work along side with during the service projects. It's nice to get to know others besides those I hang out with every day.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? I hope they would call me loyal, dependable, and social. I'm very outgoing and love people. I'm also very dedicated to all that I do.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? Definitely do it! It's rewarding to help others and to see your work pay off. I really want to lead an Alternative Spring Break with the college next year, so I would tell those considering to doing that to definitely do it. It is a blast and such an enjoyable experience.
