Jess Branton volunteers for many different organizations, but particularly enjoys working with animals. She plays with the animals and gives them the love and attention that a lot of them have been deprived of. She improves the quality of the animals' lives that she works with and, in turn, the animals improve their adopter's lives.

"I get to play with the animals and help out with anything else that I may be needed," Jessica says. "I particularly enjoy playing with the strays. These dogs have to be kept separate from the others until their evaluation is complete and so do not receive much interaction otherwise.

"I am also planning a summer trip to Moncks Corner with the United Methodist Relief Center. The trip is to refurbish low income housing and help in underprivileged areas."

About Jessica Branton...
Hometown: Moncks Corner, S.C. Major: Biology Expected Graduation: Spring 2012

Past Volunteer Activites: I have been volunteering since my freshmen year in highschool and have participated in many different events. Recently, I co-lead a trip to Guatemala for animal rehabilitation.

Current Volunteer Activities: I am currently involved with the Charleston Animal Society, Berkeley County Paws, and Paws for a Cause.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience? My most memorable moment is from when I was a sophomore in high school. I was in a volunteer organization called the Interact Club. Through the fundraising done by us in this club and the Rotary Club, we were able to have a tumor removed from a six month old baby's brain.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organizations? I am most proud of giving these animals a second chance at a better life. I am also proud to see the look on the adopters' faces when they find their perfect dog.

What do you enjoy most about community service: The best thing that comes from doing community service is knowing that you're doing something good for someone else to help them.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? I have been described as caring and spontaneous. I was told that I am a go-getter and dedicated to achieving my goals.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? Just do it. Why not? The greatest gift you can give is to dedicate your time to bettering the community.

What are your plans after graduation? My dream is to work with the World Wildlife Fund. I may join the Peace Corps.
