About Elizabeth Somer...
Hometown: Ridgefield, Conn. Major: Art History/Historic Preservation Expected Graduation: Spring 2010

Past Volunteer Activites: I have been doing Habitat for Humanity since high school, it really is my favorite organization to work with. I was also the philanthropy/ community service chair for my sorority and have worked with Make a Wish Foundation.

Current Volunteer Activities: I am currently the President of CofC chapter of Habitat for Humanity. I loves going out on work days and building the homes for families. As President of CofC Habitat for Humanity, I conduct bi weekly meetings and fundraises regularly. Half of the proceeds from out fundraising goes to the Downtown Habitat for Humanity.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience? Every experience I have had has been amazing and life changing in some way or another. But knowing I can help children makes those experiences the most rewarding because children are the most important part of our society because they are our future and they deserve the most help and attention because they can not help the hand that they are dealt with. So I think it is the community's responsibility to take care of them.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organizations? There is nothing like the feeling I get when I see a family walking into their newly build Habitat for Humanity finished homes. There is a big ceremony with each new finished home, and the families are always so appreciative of our hard work. Also, they usually provide a delicious dinner or dessert, yum!

What do you enjoy most about community service:
I really like meeting the wonderful people while doing community service. Everyone comes together for one reason; to help others, and this always creates such a wonderful feeling and "vibe" around us. It makes you feel good. I also enjoy knowing that I've contributed to society.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? I love to bake! After doing so many fundraisers I've found that bake sales are my favorite. I've gotten very creative with decorations and wrapping. I think my friends would also say I'm very determined. I may have a lot on my plate, but I always get things done.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? Do it! There is nothing I can think of that would be against volunteering. It really is a win-win situation. A great place to start is right here on the College of Charleston campus. There are so many clubs and organizations that are always looking for help. Volunteering also gives you some first hand experience that you may not be able to find else where.

What are your plans after graduation? I plan on staying in Charleston for a bit longer to try and get into historic preservation. This is the perfect city for that.
