Jenny West is not your typical college student by any means.

Aside from double majoring in art history and psychology and having minors in both Studio Art and Health, Jenny has somehow managed to find the time to volunteer for six different organizations over the course of the three years she has spent here at the College of Charleston.

In addition to being a member of the College of Charleston Psychology Club, the Psi Chi Psychology Honors Society, and the Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity, Jenny volunteers once a week as a phone counselor at the 211 Hotline, and two days a week at the Low Country Senior Center, where she teaches a fitness orientation class.

Instead of using her Spring Break this year as a chance to relax and take a well-deserved break from her hectic schedule, Jenny decided to spend her week off from classes volunteering in Costa Rica where she worked on an organic farm.

Such "Alternative Spring Breaks" are offered each year by the College's Office of Service-Learning. Students looking for an experience different from the usual Spring Break routine can sign up for an Alternative Spring Break trip! ASB strives to incorporate service to the community while having an amazing time with like-minded people.

More on ASB and other volunteer opportunities can be learned by going to the Office of Service-Learning website at https://www.cofc.edu/servicelearning/

Jenny has also volunteered with Trident United Way's 2-1-1 Hotline. The hotline is a general counseling, crisis intervention, information and referral line that is answered by volunteers.

For more information about the 2-1-1 Hotline please call 566-7186. Volunteers are always being sought.

About Jenny West...
Hometown: Memphis, Tenn. Major: Art History and Psychology Expected Graduation: May 2010

Current Volunteer Activities: Low Country Senior Center, 211 Hotline, and Alternative Spring Break 2009

Past Volunteer Activites: Miracle League, St. Matthews Community Outreach Center, and Pet Helpers

What is your most memorable volunteer experience? Volunteering with the Low Country Senior Center has allowed me to meet some of the most interesting, compassionate people I have ever encountered. The staff and other volunteers there were initially and continue to be incredibly welcoming and have opened my eyes to so many valuable lessons and skills.

What do you enjoy most about community service: The diversity many volunteer settings provide. Volunteering allows for the chance to meet people outside of one's normal environment and age group.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? Independent, capable, caring, reliable

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? To a person considering volunteering, I would want to emphasize that community service provides invaluable opportunities to expand one's horizons, meet new people, and realize where one's interests do and do not lie. It isn't necessary to volunteer in an area that clearly relates to one's intended future career; even seemingly unrelated venues offer chances to develop skills applicable to all areas of one's life.

What are your plans after graduation? I plan on going to graduate school to pursue a career in psychology.
