Maggie Veith is a sophomore here at College of Charleston. She may seem quiet and reserved but she is always willing to do something different.

Maggie actually spent here first year of college at University College Cork in Dublin, Ireland before transferring to Charleston this past fall.

Maggie's love of nature was shown during Spring Break when instead of heading for the sandy beaches, she choose the forests of Guatemala where she worked with Arcas, an organization that recues native animals in the pet trade and rehabs them to get them back into the wild.

About Maggie Veith...
Hometown: Silver Springs, Md. Major: Biology Expected Graduation: Spring 2011

Is this your first time volunteering? This isn't my first time volunteering but, I have never volunteered for something at this scale. I have coached basketball back home for a few years but this was definitely a new experience for me.

How would your family and friend describe you? Well they would say I am very shy and quiet at times. But also that I am an extremely hard worker and am always up for a new adventure.

What were some of activities you did during your time there? We did a lot of hard physical labor. Not only did we assist with cleaning the cages and feeding the animals, but we also built two gardens which will help feed not only the animals but also the workers at Arcas.

Any words of advice for someone thinking of volunteering? Volunteering is a lot of work but also really rewarding. It's something that you'll always remember and if you go in with a positive outlook it will be a great experience.

Anything else you would like to add? If you are looking for an organization to volunteer for Arcas is a great one. They do great work and really care about these animals and do whatever they can to get them back into the wild where they belong.
