Alissa Collins

If anyone is to break the mold of the stereotypical college student, it's Alissa Collins. In addition to being a full-time student at C of C, Alissa works 35 hours a week at a local law firm and still manages to find time to spend volunteering at St. Matthews Community Center located on King Street.

While Alissa does a little bit of everything at the center, she is in her third year of involvement with the AS Kids, an after school program for students in K-7th grades. She makes sure the kids get snacks, helps them with their homework, and plans enrichment activities to stimulate their young minds.

On top of that, Alissa enjoys simply hanging out with her little buddies and serving as a positive role model for them. Davontey, an afternoon regular at St. Matthews, "loves playing and doing homework with Alissa." Tiasia, another student there, says she likes when she and Alissa "go on field trips."

About Alissa Collins...
Hometown: Trumbull, Connecticut
Degree program(s): Major in Political Science with a double minor in Spanish and Crime/Law in Society
Expected graduation date: May 2007
Were you previously involved in any other volunteer activities? During my freshman year, I was involved with CSASA, an organization that fights child sexual abuse.
What inspired you to get involved in community service? As a freshman at the college, I wasn't on a sports team or anything like that, so I had a lot of free time on my hands. One day, I realized that, instead of taking a three hour nap every day, I could be helping someone.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering? The relationships I have developed are really rewarding. I really enjoy the closeness that I have with all the kids and I consider them all to be my own! I keep in contact with them throughout the summer too, and it's just great to really see the positive effect that I can have on them.
Most memorable volunteer experience? I have so many memorable experiences here at the center, but I particularly enjoy the Cinderella Project that we do here in the springtime. Formal dresses, shoes, jewelry, unused makeup and even tuxedo rental gift certificates are all donated to St. Matthews. We spend a lot of time setting up a boutique here so that girls and guys who couldn't otherwise afford it can get all they need to get ready for their big night. I remember my high school prom and I hope that what we do here makes theirs just as special.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? I would encourage anyone who is interested to attend a Volunteer Fair on campus so that they can learn about all the community service opportunities available. It's really a good time and a great way to make friends.
What are your plans for after graduation? I plan on going to law school and becoming an attorney. Then, I want to be a judge, Supreme Court justice, and president! I'm thinking big!
