Cara Freudenberg

Cara Freudenberg seems to be a true free spirit; one may describe her as spontaneous, empathetic, introspective, and persistent. Volunteering is just one of her many passions which include playing the guitar, listening to music, traveling, sunny days, and spending quality time with her friends and family. Needless to say, Cara seems to be passionate in everything she does; she values generosity and honesty and lives by these values.

Her volunteer efforts are sincere and focused on her career—a lifetime dedicated to listening and helping others. Next year she plans to begin a doctorate program in pursuit of her goal to become a clinical psychologist, specializing in treating eating disorders. She values open minds and hearts and is most proud of her ability to “contribute a listening ear and open mind to all in need."
About Cara Freudenberg

Hometown:
Charleston, S.C.
Degree Objective:
Psychology
Current Volunteer Activities: I am currently volunteering for the United Way 2-1-1 Hotline. I was especially attracted to the hotline because of my interest in psychology. I felt that the extensive training in active listening and crisis intervention skills and the experience of being a telephone counselor at the hotline would be an excellent opportunity to counsel diverse individuals with a wide variety of needs and issues.
Previous Volunteer Activities: My parents have always stressed the importance helping others and giving back to the community. I began volunteering in high school, at St. Francis hospital, a veterinary clinic, and the SPCA. While at the University of Georgia, I volunteered for a non-profit AIDS prevention and education organization and a non-profit health and music resource center called Nuçi's Space.
What do you enjoy about community service? I feel that I am making a difference in the lives of individuals, the community, and ultimately the world. Just knowing that I am making an impact is so satisfying.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.  ~Leo Buscaglia. Go to the Trident United Way website (www.tuw.org) to find all kinds of volunteer opportunities all over the community! Other ways to find out about volunteer opportunities: Call 2-1-1 hotline 24 hours a day, 7 days a week @ 2-1-1 or 744-HELP. To learn more about Nuçi's Space, go to www.nuci.org
