Volunteering isn’t an easy job, but Heather Crouch finds that the hard work makes the outcome that much more rewarding.

On a recent trip to the Dominican Republic as part of C of C's Alternative Spring Break program,Heather and her team were met with the challenge of overcoming a completely different culture and language. Yet, instead of giving up, they dove into their projects, did as much

as they could, and in the end they were really able to feel the impact they had made. In fact, despite the hard work involved, Heather describes this experience as one of her proudest moments.

About Heather Crouch...
Hometown: Asheville, N.C.
Degree Objective: Business Administration/Spanish
Expected Graduation Date: 2010
Volunteer History: Volunteering has always been a big part of my life. I volunteered through my church on mission trips and events in my community and I was involved in Leaders Club at the YMCA which is a teen volunteer organization.
Current Volunteer Activities:
I was involved in Alternative Spring Break and went to the Dominican Republic this past spring break with a group of 13 other students to volunteer in schools.
What drives you to volunteer? I have been so fortunate in my life and I want other people to be able to get some of the opportunities that I have had. My faith is also a big driving force for me because volunteering is a great way to meet people I otherwise never would, and to share my faith with them.
What do you most enjoy about volunteering? I love when I can create a type of chain reaction and as I am working I see other people start helping out and I know that it is really making a difference.
What would you say to encourage students who are considering volunteering? I would suggest finding something they are interested in and volunteer in that area because that is when you will get the most out of it. After you volunteer once you will see what is so amazing about it.
What inspires you most? I get inspired just by looking around and seeing all that I have and seeing people on the streets or others that are in need.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve overcome?
In high school I was a leader in YMCA Leaders Club and it was extremely hard for me to get everyone excited about volunteering.
How do your friends and co-workers describe you? I would think they would describe me as caring, hard-working, and fun. I get myself involved in a lot of things but I always try to have fun while doing them.
